The History of the Birkin Bag

Hermès, a company that started by making saddles in 1837, expanded their range in two centuries to include fashion, perfumes, decor, luggage, and other products.

Jane Mallory Birkin, actress and singer, when boarding a plane in 1984, was having a tough time managing her many bags, when the president of Hermès who was there, used this as an inspiration for a new product: the Birkin Bag.

Jane Birkin and Hermès president Jean-Louis Dumas designed the bag together, and that became one of the most expensive, but popular bag they sold. The Birkin bag's price ranges from about $6000 onwards, and has adorned the arms of many celebs, like Jada Pinkett Smith, Demi Moore, Kate Moss and Lindsay Lohan and seen in TV shows like Sex and the City.
